Talented British actor who spent five years with The Royal Shakespeare Company before gaining fame here and abroad as Sergeant Guy Perron in the TV miniseries "The Jewel in the Crown" (1983). He had debuted in the small role of a gunman in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only (1981), but made a striking impact as Meryl Streep's patient diplomat husband in Plenty (1985). He played sinister villains in The Golden Child (1986) and Last Action Hero (1993), but had more impressive parts in The McGuffin (1985), Good Morning, Babylon (1987, memorable as D. W. Griffith), White Mischief (also 1987), Pascali's Island (1988) and Alien3 (1992). He has also appeared in the TV movies Out on a Limb (1987, opposite Shirley MacLaine) and The Phantom of the Opera (1990, in the title role).
