Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Vance attended Harvard University earning a degree in history. It was at Harvard that he became interested in theater, appearing in several theatrical productions at the university and becoming a member of the Boston Shakespeare Company.
After graduation from Harvard, Vance entered the Yale School of Drama where he was cast as James Earl Jones' son in the premiere of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Fences. When the play was presented on Broadway Vance received a Tony Award nomination, a Theater World Award and the Clarence Derwent Award. He returned to the Broadway stage starring opposite Stockard Channing in John Guare's Six Degrees of Separation, earning a second Tony Award nomination. His other theatre credits include Temptation by Vaclav Havel, Romeo and Juliet at the New York Shakespeare Festival, and Athol Fugard's My Children. My Africa, for which he won an Obie Award. Vance's other films include The Adventures of Huck Finn, Holy Matrimony, The Hunt for Red October and Hamburger Hill.
