Enrique Iglesias was born in Madrid, Spain on May 8, 1975.
Son of international music superstar Julio Iglesias, Enrique was brought up in Miami and started writing songs at the age of 15.
By the age of 17 his blend of American and Latin musical influences scored Enrique a three-album deal and $1 million advance from an LA independent label. The release of his eponymous debut in 1995 later earned him a Billboard Album Of The Year (new artist), and two World Music Awards. It sold 6 million copies world-wide. The deal with Fonovisa was struck with Enrique masquerading as a Colombian hopeful using the surname Martinez, a ploy devised to hide any connection with his father, Julio Iglesias. In fact, by the time Iglesias senior found out about his son dropping out of a business degree to pursue a career in music, his first album was about to be released.
By 1997 he found himself on the David Letterman show playing live for the first time and in the same year collected the Grammy for best Latin Performer and the Billboard Award for Best Artist Of The Year.
