John McTiernan was born in Albany, New York, USA. He was a former film student and director of TV commercials who has gone on to become one of Hollywood's leading "money" moviemakers. A visually oriented craftsman who relies more on fluid camera work and tight cutting than on fluid performances and tight scripts, he specializes in big-budget, spectacular action-adventure fare such as Predator (1987), Die Hard (1988), and The Hunt for Red October (1989). Without the trappings of technowizardry, Medicine Man (1992) seemed to find McTiernan adrift. Last Action Hero (1993) put him back in his element, but the overblown production, stupefying budget, and lack of cohesive storyline made it an inviting target for critical potshots. McTiernan returned to familiar ground for Die Hard With a Vengeance (1995).
