"Saturday Night Live" veteran whose delivery has been described as "an almost melodic mix of pomposity and self-doubt," Lovitz has evolved into a successful character actor on-screen. He began with small roles in Last Resort (1985), Jumpin' Jack Flash, ¡Three Amigos! (both 1986), Big and My Stepmother Is an Alien (both 1988), then nearly walked away with the comedy hit A League of Their Own (1992) in his relatively brief screen time as crabby baseball scout Ernie "Cappy" Capadino (a role he repeated in the 1993 pilot for a TV-series spinoff of the movie). He had his first leading role in the inane Mom and Dad Save the World (1992). He also added his own comic energy to the 1987 animated feature The Brave Little Toaster as the voice of an obnoxious radio, and provided the voice of Chula the tarantula in An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991). Recent credits include National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon I (1993), City Slickers 2: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994).
