Lou Diamond Phillips was born February 17, 1962 in Subic Bay Naval Station, Philippines, as Lou Upchurch. He is named for Gunnery Sergeant Lou Diamond, USMC. The name Phillips is from his step father. He is part Cherokee, part Hawaiian, part Chinese, part Spanish and part Scotch-Irish! Before making a name for himself as the ill-fated teenage rock star Ritchie Valens in La Bamba (1987), he co-wrote and starred in the little-known Trespasses in 1983. He has continued to work on both sides of the camera, as associate producer and star of Dakota, screenwriter and star of Ambition and director and star of Sioux City. He is married to Kelly Phillips and they have three daughters. He currently stars as the King on the revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I.
