New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza is a major asset in the batter’s box. This 10-year Major League veteran holds the record for the most home runs for any National League catcher. Named to the All-Star team 10 times, Mike has been a strong player since his first season with the LA Dodgers in 1993, when he was named Rookie of the Year.
Mike worked hard to reach his high level of success. He grew up in Philadelphia, playing first base for his high school team. Major League Baseball surrounded him in his youth. Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams once coached the young Mike on his batting skills, and baseball legends Tommy Lasorda and Joe DiMaggio were family friends. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1988, and played as a catcher in the minors until being called up to the Dodgers in 1992. The next year, Mike hit 35 home runs and had 112 RBIs, making him the National League’s Rookie of the Year. Mike became a major asset for the Dodgers for the next Five years, until he was traded to the New York Mets in 1998. Mike’s hard work over the years has arguably made him the best-hitting catcher in the history of Major League Baseball, and he continues to be strong in the batter’s box today.
