Philip Seymour Hoffman was born in Fairport, NY. While attending high school, Hoffman became active in amateur theatrics, appearing in several school productions. After graduating from NYU's Tisch School of Drama, he pursued a stage career but took on odd jobs to pay the rent. He received his first big screen break in the 1992 film Scent of a Woman, billing himself as Philip S. Hoffman.
In addition to his extensive theater credits, Hoffman has worked steadily in Hollywood and has become a respected and dependable actor. His movie credits include Boogie Nights, Twister, The Big Lebowski, Patch Adams, Magnolia, and The Talented Mr. Ripley.
