Thomas Lee Bass was born in Athens, Greece. His mother was a Miss Greece and his father was a U.S. soldier.
Tommy's first rock band was Suite 19. He left in 1980 to form Mötley Crüe, which soon put out a self-produced debut album titled Too Fast for Love. The band signed a deal with Elektra Records, and they remixed and rereleased the album in 1982. The following year, the group released Shout at the Devil and Theater of Pain, which broke them to a large audience.
Mötley Crüe quickly lived up to its rock 'n' roll image. Drugs, sex and the wild side not only showed in its music but its lifestyle. In 1984, lead singer Vince Neil got into a drunken-driving accident in which fellow rocker Hanoi Rocks drummer Razzle was killed. Four years later, Nikki Sixx was pronounced dead after an overdose but was revived, inspiring the song "Kickstart My Heart."
