Towering, authoritative but immensely likable leading man equally at home in big action spectacles and kitchen-sink dramas. An alumnus of the Black Actors' Workshop of the American Conservatory Theatre, and a prolific stage performer, Glover first appeared on film in a tiny role in Escape From Alcatraz (1979), and subsequently labored in the forgettable Chu Chu and the Philly Flash (1981) and Out (1982), among others. He first attracted notice as Sally Field's farmhand in Places in the Heart (1984), enlarging on that success the following year as a murderous cop in Witness a surprisingly believable cowboy in Silverado and the contemptible "Mister" in The Color Purple. The size of Glover's roles grew with his reputation, and he scored as Vietnam combatants in BAT 21 (1988) and Flight of the Intruder (1991), a monster-fighting police officer in Predator 2 a superstitious mobster in A Rage in Harlem (both 1990), and a towtruck driver with heart and soul in Grand Canyon (1991). He was also memorable in the superb TV miniseries "Lonesome Dove" (1989). For all his dramatic power, he is still best known as the long-suffering partner of wacky cop Mel Gibson in the Lethal Weapon series (1987, 1989, 1992). But the star clout he's developed in films like that has enabled him to participate in more intimate, personal projects like To Sleep With Anger (1990, which he coproduced) and Bopha! (1993).
